Toenail fungus is caused by organisms that grow in warm, moist areas and can affect people who are older, athletes, or have health problems like diabetes.
Toenail fungus occurs because tiny fungi, like dermatophytes and yeasts, can get into your nail when you are in damp places. These fungi love warm and wet areas, so places like locker rooms, swimming pools, or even sweaty socks can make it easier for the fungus to grow. People who often spend time in these environments, such as athletes, are more at risk. Also, older adults and those with conditions like diabetes or weakened immune systems have a harder time fighting off infections, so they can be more likely to get toenail fungus. In addition, people with poor foot hygiene or who wear tight shoes that don’t let air in may also be at higher risk. To help prevent toenail fungus, keep your feet dry and clean, wear shoes that allow your feet to breathe, and avoid walking barefoot in places where fungus likes to grow. If you suspect you have a toenail fungus, it is important to see a healthcare professional for the best treatment options.
