At home, you can care for an infected ingrown fingernail by soaking it in warm, soapy water, gently cleaning it, and using over-the-counter antibiotic cream, but if the infection worsens, seeing a doctor is important.
First, wash your hands and make sure the area is clean. Soak the affected finger in warm, soapy water for about 15 minutes three or four times a day. This helps soften the nail and reduce pain. After soaking, gently clean the area with a soft cloth or gauze and consider using a mild antiseptic. If you feel comfortable, you can try to gently lift the edge of the nail with a clean piece of cotton or dental floss; however, be very careful not to cause more pain or damage. Next, apply an over-the-counter antibiotic cream to help fight the infection, and cover it with a clean bandage or gauze. It is also best to trim the nail straight across rather than curving it, which helps prevent future issues. Remember to keep the nail area clean and dry. If you notice increasing redness, swelling, or if you develop a fever or severe pain, it is important to contact a doctor as these could be signs that the infection is getting worse and needs professional care.
