A yeast fungal infection of the toe can cause redness, itching, and scaling, and if it reaches the toenail, it can lead to thickening or discoloration. Treatment typically involves topical antifungal creams, and in more persistent cases, oral medications might be needed.
A yeast fungal infection, often caused by Candida species, can affect your toe by making the skin red, itchy, and sometimes sore. You might notice peeling or scaling of the skin, especially between the toes or under the nail. If the infection spreads to the nail, known as onychomycosis, the nail can become thick, discolored, or brittle. To treat this type of infection, doctors usually start with topical antifungal treatments. These are creams, ointments, or lacquers applied directly to the affected area. Topical treatment works well for mild infections and helps clear the fungus from the skin and nail surface. If the infection is more stubborn or affects a larger area, your doctor may prescribe oral antifungal medications to help fight the infection from within. In addition to medication, keeping your feet clean and dry, using antifungal powders, and wearing breathable footwear are important steps to prevent recurrence. Always follow your healthcare provider’s instructions and check in with them if the symptoms do not improve.
