What is hemophilia?

An inherited bleeding disorder in which blood is unable to clot properly due to a reduced number of blood-clotting proteins (clotting factors), resulting in bleeding for longer than usual and even from slight injuries.

Symptoms of hemophilia

  • Family history of hemophilia

  • Bleeding inside joint

  • Bruising easily

  • Nosebleed

  • Purple rash

  • Skin abnormality

  • Red spots on the skin

  • Swelling of the affected area

Questions your doctor may ask to check for hemophilia

Your doctor may ask these questions to diagnose hemophilia

  • Did your maternal grandfather or your father have hemophilia?

  • Have you experienced bleeding or bruising in your joints?

  • Do you bleed easily, even due to minor injuries?

  • Are you having nose bleeding?

  • Do you have purple spots on your skin?

Treatment for hemophilia

Hemophilia is typically treated by replacing the missing blood clotting factor by injecting into the vein, so that the blood can clot properly.
