A bacterial infection of the areas around the tonsils, or deep parts of the neck. Pus accumulates in these areas, forming an abscess.
Sore throat
Fever
Difficulty swallowing food or water

This condition is typically treated with antibiotics. If the abscess is large, the doctor may cut or drain the abscess to remove the pus. If you are unable to drink and swallow, hospitalization for monitoring and fluids given through a needle may be needed. Abscesses near or on the tonsils usually require prompt treatment.
