Elbow pain when leaning can be caused by swelling in a small, fluid-filled cushion called the bursa or by irritation from other soft tissue injuries.
A bursa is a small fluid-filled sac that cushions your elbow and reduces friction between bones. When you lean on your elbow, the olecranon bursa—located at the tip of your elbow—can become swollen and irritated. This painful condition, called olecranon bursitis, makes the area tender when pressure is applied. Elbow pain can also result from strained muscles or tendons near the joint due to overuse injuries. Frequently leaning on your elbow or experiencing an injury can cause repetitive pressure damage to the soft tissues, resulting in pain and swelling. To avoid further irritation, avoid putting weight on your elbow. If the pain persists, consult a doctor who can evaluate the condition and recommend appropriate.
