The walls of the intestines sometimes contain small pouches called diverticula. Risk factors include chronic constipation, aging and obesity.
Blood in stool
Your doctor may ask these questions to diagnose diverticular bleeding
Is there blood in your stool?
This requires emergency medical care. To stop the bleeding, specialists may use a scope (camera) in the intestines to find the bleeding, and seal it through burning or pressure. Other options include putting a wire through the bloodstream under X-ray guidance - this will find the blood vessel that is bleeding and plug it. Surgery is a final option for severe bleeding that does not respond to the above treatments.
