What is otitis media?

Infection of the middle ear (area just behind the eardrum) by bacteria or viruses. Although the cause is an infection, risk factors include a blocked nose, allergies, and smoke exposure.

Symptoms of otitis media

  • Ear pain

  • Significant difference in hearing difficulty between my left and right ear

  • Common cold or stomach flu symptoms before the fever appeared

  • Hearing difficulty

  • Fever

  • Repeated episodes of fever above 100.4°F / 38°C

  • Wet or phlegmy cough

  • Cough that is worse at night

Questions your doctor may ask to check for otitis media

Your doctor may ask these questions to diagnose otitis media

  • Do you have ear pain?

  • Do you feel that there is a large difference in your hearing between left and right ear?

  • Did you experience any common cold or stomach flu symptoms before your current fever appeared?

  • Do you have hearing problems?

  • Do you have a fever?

Treatment for otitis media

This condition may often heal by itself. The doctor may prescribe ear drops, antibiotics, or oral medicines for pain relief. If the infection lasts for a long time, a tiny tube may be inserted into the eardrum to help fluid drain out faster.
