Thrombophlebitis is an inflammation of blood vessels that causes a blood clot to form and block one or more veins, typically in the legs. This can occur in surface veins or deep veins.
Skin hardening
Swelling of the affected area
Pain in the arms and/or legs
Your doctor may ask these questions to diagnose thrombophlebitis
Do you have hardening of the skin?
Is the affected area swollen?
Do you have pain in your arms and/or legs?
Surface vein thrombophlebitis is usually treated with anti-inflammatory medications and antibiotics. Applying compression using compressive garments and elevating the limb provides relief. The clot in the deep veins might need additional treatment with blood-thinning drugs.
