About the symptom

Groin tenderness describes the pain or discomfort felt when the area of hip between the stomach and thigh is touched.

When to see a doctor

Seek professional care if you experience any of the following symptoms

  • Lower abdominal pain

  • Menstrual abnormality (duration or volume)

  • Intermenstrual bleeding

  • Abnormal menstruation

  • Groin swelling on standing

Possible causes

  • Inguinal hernia

An inguinal hernia is a condition where a bulge appears in your groin region, in the area between your lower abdomen and your thigh, through a weakening of muscles in your lower abdomen. This bulge is commonly a protrusion of your tissue or abdominal organs such as your intestines. If not treated, inguinal hernias can result in an obstruction of your digestive system.

  • Transient synovitis

Inflammation and swelling of the lining of the hip joint. It occurs when a viral infection moves to and settles in the hip joint. This condition is most often seen in children aged between three and 10 years old

  • Perthes disease

A childhood hip disorder initiated by a disruption of blood flow to the head of the bone in the upper leg. Due to the lack of blood flow, the bone dies and stops growing.

Related serious diseases

  • Ectopic pregnancy

A condition where pregnancy occurs in any location other than the uterus. This is abnormal, and most commonly occurs in the Fallopian tube. If the pregnancy continues, the tube can rupture and bleed - this can be life-threatening.
