About the symptom

Hypersensitivity is the abnormal reaction of the immune system that occur in response to exposure to otherwise harmless substances. Hypersensitivity in oral cavity may cause redness or whiteness of the mucosa; swelling of the lips, tongue and cheeks or ulcers and blisters.

When to see a doctor

Seek professional care if you experience any of the following symptoms

  • Sensitive mouth

Possible causes

  • Viral mucositis

  • Candidiasis (oral, hands and feet)

Normal human skin contains bacteria and fungi. Candidiasis happens when the fungus overgrows and invades the skin. Risk factors include warm moist environments, and a weakened immune system.

  • Stomatitis

Inflammation of the mouth surface produces ulcers. The causes are varied, including vitamin deficiencies, medications, and autoimmunity (body's own immune system attacking itself). Often, no clear cause is found and the ulcers heal by themselves.

  • Burn/scald of roof of mouth
