What is aerophagia?

Excessive and repetitive swallowing of air, resulting in symptoms of burping and flatulence. It can be caused by psychological reasons or habits, or use of machines that assist in breathing (CPAP machines).

Symptoms of aerophagia

  • Stomach feels bloated

  • Excessive burping

  • Passing gas more than usual

  • Feeling uncomfortably bloated after meals

  • Stressed over daily life

Questions your doctor may ask to check for aerophagia

Your doctor may ask these questions to diagnose aerophagia

  • Do you feel that your abdomen (stomach) is bloated or has a lot of gas?

  • Do you burp a lot everyday?

  • Do you pass gas more than usual?

  • Do you feel psychologically stressed (for example, you clearly hate going to work or school)?

Treatment for aerophagia

Treatment is mostly with lifestyle and habit changing. A speech therapist can help you with behavior modification therapy. If caused by CPAP machines, a better-fitting mask may help.
