About the Symptom

Sleep apnea is a potentially serious disorder in which breathing repeatedly stops or there is reduced air flow during sleep. It may be due to the brain not trigging breathing effectively (central) or more commonly due to blockage by a structure in the nose, mouth, or throat (obstructive).

When to see a doctor

Seek professional care if you experience any of the following symptoms

  • Easy fatiguability

  • Headache

Possible Causes

Generally, Sleep apnea can be related to:

  • Sleep Apnea Syndrome

A group of sleep disorders where breathing repeatedly abnormally slows or stops . It may be caused by physical obstruction of the airway, abnormal brain signaling or a mixture of both. Symptoms include snoring, choking during sleep, daytime drowsiness and morning headaches. If left untreated, it also increases the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases like heart attack, stroke and kidney failure.

  • Diabetes Mellitus

A disease where blood sugar levels are abnormally high due to issues with insulin production or resistance. Often, there are no symptoms until the condition worsens, so regular screening is important. Over time, high sugar levels can cause many complications affecting the nervous system, heart, eyes and kidneys.

  • Sleep Disorder

Sleep disorders are conditions that affect the quality, timing, or duration of your sleep, impacting your ability to function when you're awake. There are many types of sleep disorders, including disturbances in sleep quality or quantity, excessive daytime sleepiness, abnormal behaviors during sleep, sleep disorders related to mental disorders, and more.
