What is femoral neck fracture?

Fracture of the hip bone. This kind of fracture often occurs in older patients with osteoporosis (bone weakening) who sustain a fall on the buttocks.

Symptoms of femoral neck fracture

  • Difficulty moving the joint(s)

  • Difficulty in walking

  • Hip joint hurts when sleeping

  • Hip joint hurts when walking

  • History of osteoporosis / weak bones

Treatment for femoral neck fracture

Surgery is needed to fix the hip joint. In younger patients this can be done with screws or plates. In older patients, replacing the hip joint with an implant may be needed. Treatment continues with physical therapy to improve muscle strength.
