What is pertussis?

A bacterial illness causing strong coughing, also called "whooping cough". Pertussis is highly contagious.

Symptoms of pertussis

  • Noisy breathing; e.g. wheezing, rattling

  • Paroxysmal cough with inspiratory wheeze / whooping

  • Coughing vigorously till the face is red

  • Bouts of violent coughing

  • Cough

  • Irritability / bad mood

  • Fever

  • Nausea or vomiting
