What is pertussis?

A bacterial illness that causes vigorous coughing, also known as "whooping cough". Pertussis is highly contagious.

  • Noisy breathing; e.g. wheezing, rattling

  • Coughing vigorously till the face is red

  • Bouts of violent coughing

  • Irritability / bad mood

Treatment for pertussis

This is treated with antibiotics. Young children and infants may need to be hospitalized for observation, oxygen or fluids to be given by a needle in the vein.
