Transient global amnesia is the sudden, temporary memory loss which is not due to a more common cause such as a stroke or epilepsy. During an episode the memory of recent events disappears. The cause is unknown but trigger may include exposure to sudden hot or cold water, strenuous physical activity or emotional distress.
