Generalized myxedema involves dry, waxy, swollen and pale/yellowish skin. It happens when there is severe hypothyroidism - very low levels of the thyroid hormone circulating in the bloodstream. If untreated, serious complications of hypothyroidism can occur including myxedema coma (loss of brain function due to severe, long standing hypothyroidism). This condition is most common amongst women aged 30 to 60.
