What is ovulation bleeding?

Ovulation is the process when the ovary releases an egg as part of the normal female reproductive cycle. It typically happens in the middle of a menstrual cycle (about 2 weeks after the end of the period). At the time of ovulation, some women may feel some cramping or lower abdominal pain that resolves by itself. This is called mid-cycle pain (mittelschmerz), and it can occasionally cause some mild bleeding or spotting along with it. If there is no other cause for the pain or bleeding, this is not considered to be harmful.

Symptoms of ovulation bleeding

  • Bleeding in between menstrual cycles / periods or after menopause

  • Abdominal pain

  • Lower abdominal pain

  • Fever

  • Tummy pain around 2 weeks before menstruation

  • Sexually active within the last 3 months

  • Low back pain

Questions your doctor may ask to check for ovulation bleeding

Your doctor may ask these questions to diagnose ovulation bleeding

  • Have you had vaginal bleeding, brown or pink colored vaginal discharge outside of your periods? Or, after the menopause?

  • Do you have abdominal pain (stomach ache)?

  • Do you have pain in the lower part of your abdomen (stomach)?

  • Do you have a fever?

  • Do you have abdominal (stomach) pain around 2 weeks before menstruation?

Treatment for ovulation bleeding

Ovulation bleeding isn't serious and typically stops on its own within a few days and isn't heavy or painful. If there is concern for irregular periods or bleeding between periods, this should be discussed with your gynecologist as there are many other causes for such bleeding.
