What is primary biliary cirrhosis?

Previously called primary biliary cirrhosis. An autoimmune disease where the body's immune system attacks the bile ducts in the liver causing inflammation and damage, slowly.

Symptoms of primary biliary cirrhosis

  • History of Sjogren's syndrome

  • Black, shiny stool

  • Skin Itching

  • Skin or eyes turning yellow

  • Skin itching that worsens at night

  • Red or yellow skin lumps

  • History of liver problems

  • Right hypochondriac region swelling

Treatment for primary biliary cirrhosis

While there is no cure, treatment aims to manage symptoms and slow down the disease. The doctor may prescribe medication to improve liver function and reduce liver scarring and itching. In severe cases, a liver transplant may be needed.
