About the symptom

Stomach noises, growling or borborygmi can be caused by normal digestion called peristalsis. It describes a condition when a person is aware of his or her own intestinal peristaltic movement. Peristalsis is a series of wave-like muscle contractions that move food through the digestive tract.

When to see a doctor

Seek professional care if you experience any of the following symptoms

  • Recent weight loss

  • White or clay-colored stools

  • Edema

  • Abdominal pain

  • Fever

  • Hematochezia (rectal bleeding)

  • Unexplained weight loss of 5% or more in 1 month

  • Lower abdominal pain

Possible causes

  • Bacterial gastroenteritis

Bacterial infection of the gut. It can be prevented by cleaning fruits and vegetables, cooking raw meat properly to kill bacteria causing food poisoning, and making sure all water is boiled before consumption.

  • Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)

A condition with recurring episodes of abdominal discomfort, diarrhea, and constipation. IBS is diagnosed when no clear cause can be found despite investigations. The exact cause of IBS is unknown, but stress and certain foods are known to cause flare-ups.

  • Viral gastroenteritis

Viral infection of the stomach and intestines ("stomach flu"). It is transmitted from other patients who have the same illness. Washing hands and not sharing food/drinks is important in breaking the transmission of this disease.

  • Ulcerative colitis
  • Lactose intolerance
  • Crohn's disease
  • Nicotine addiction

  • Thalamic syndrome

Related serious diseases

  • Gas gangrene

This is a severe and potentially fatal bacterial infection (clostridial bacteria) affecting the deeper skin layers. Patients with uncontrolled diabetes and weak immune systems are at higher risk.
