An increase in the amount of breast gland tissue in boys or men, caused by an imbalance of the hormones estrogen and testosterone. This condition is usually benign (not cancer). The cause in younger men or boys is almost always hormonal changes but evaluation by a physician is recommended. In older men the chances that a breast cancer is growing are much higher. Men do get breast cancer although not anywhere near as often as women. Older men also tend to have fatty tissue under their nipples which is usually benign. Any change in the chest wall in a man, particularly under the nipples should be evaluated by a physician immediately.
