About the symptom

Bad breath or halitosis is a persistent, unpleasant odor in exhaled breath. It is usually not significant but could be due to certain foods, poor oral hygiene and certain medical conditions.

When to see a doctor

Possible causes

  • Dental caries

    Dental caries are permanently damaged areas in the teeth that develop into small holes. Common causes include sipping sugary drinks, eating sweets, frequent snacking, poor oral hygiene, and bacterial accumulation.

  • Candidiasis (oral, hands and feet)

    Normal human skin contains bacteria and fungi. Candidiasis occurs when the fungus overgrows and invades the skin. Risk factors include warm moist environments and a weakened immune system.

  • Acute tonsillitis / pharyngitis

    Infection of the tonsils and pharynx (back of the mouth), either by viruses or bacteria.

  • Stomatitis
