About the symptom

Bruising easily describes bruising with minor bumps or knocks not usually expected to cause bruises. Sometimes, the cause may not even be remembered.

When to see a doctor

Seek professional care if you experience any of the following symptoms

  • Difficulty breathing / breathlessness

  • Muscle weakness in the limbs

  • Numbness / sensory disorder

  • Swelling of the affected area

  • Repeated fever above 38 ℃

  • Recent weight loss

Possible causes

  • Cushing syndrome

This condition is caused by excessive amounts of a hormone called cortisol. It may be caused by consumption of some steroid medications or the body producing too much cortisol.

  • Drug-induced obesity

Drug-induced weight gain is a side effect of many commonly used drugs, such as long-term steroid medication. This often leads to obesity-related health problems. Due to the weight gain, some patients become irregular or discontinue the medication.

  • Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA)

Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) is a type of arthritis that occurs in children under 16 years old. It's a chronic condition that can last for months or years and affects one or more joints for at least 6 weeks. JIA occurs when the body's immune system attacks its own tissues, but the reason for this is unknown.

  • Progeria syndrome

  • Rossmund Thomson syndrome

Related serious diseases

  • Neiman-Pick disease

Niemann-Pick disease is a rare genetic disease that affects the body's ability to break down fat (cholesterol and lipids) within cells, causing these cells to malfunction and eventually die. The brain, nerves, liver, spleen, bone marrow, and, in severe cases, the lungs, can all be affected by Niemann-Pick disease.
