About the symptom

It describes the abnormal redness of affected area most likely due to inflammation or infection.

When to see a doctor

Seek professional care if you experience any of the following symptoms

  • Dysphagia

  • Fever

  • Swelling of the affected area

  • Numbness / sensory disorder

  • Recent weight loss

  • Edema

Possible causes

  • Gout / pseudogout

Gout and pseudogout are diseases caused by inflammation and crystal accumulation in the joints. Gout results from uric acid crystals, while pseudogout stems from calcium pyrophosphate crystals. Both are marked by sudden, painful swelling in one or more joints. Gout attacks can be triggered by eating purine-rich foods like seafood, alcohol, and red meat, while pseudogout may be due to joint injury, surgery, or immune issues.

  • Hyperuricemia

Hyperuricemia is an increased uric acid level in the blood. Causes include alcohol intake and high consumption of meat and seafood. It's also associated with health conditions such as diabetes, heart, and kidney disease. It can lead to several diseases, including gout, a painful type of arthritis.

  • Deep vein thrombosis

A condition in which a blood clot forms in a deep vein, usually affecting the legs. The blood clot impairs blood circulation. Sometimes, the clots can dislodge and travel to an artery in your lung, which is a medical emergency.

  • Folliculitis / furuncle / carbuncle
  • Rheumatoid arthritis (RA)
  • Suppurative lymphadenitis

  • Piriformis syndrome
  • Insect bite
  • Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE)

Related serious diseases

  • Anaphylaxis

A severe allergic reaction that affects the entire body. It can be life-threatening due to low blood pressure and airway swelling (preventing breathing). Anaphylaxis can be triggered by various things, including foods, insect stings, and medications.
