Restless legs syndrome (RLS), also known as Willis-Ekbom disease, is a condition that causes an uncontrollable urge to move the legs. RLS typically occurs while sitting or lying down. The exact cause is unknown but may be related to a chemical (dopamine) imbalance in the brain. RLS can begin at any age and generally is more common in older people. It can disrupt sleep, interfering with daily activities. Risk factors include low iron, abnormal kidney function, multiple sclerosis, and spinal cord problems.
Your doctor may ask these questions to check for this disease:
Treatment may involve medications that help reduce abnormal sensations and improve sleep. Lifestyle measures such as limiting caffeine, engaging in regular physical activity, avoiding tobacco, and practicing self-care strategies like massage, warm baths, and relaxation exercises can also provide relief.

Cold Feet or Restless Legs? How to Tell the Difference After 60
A.
There are several factors to consider. After 60, restless leg syndrome usually causes an evening or nighttime urge to move that feels like tingling or crawling and eases with movement, while poor circulation more often brings persistently cold feet, color or skin changes, weak pulses, and calf cramping with walking that improves with rest. See below to understand more, including red flags that require urgent care, how doctors tell the two apart, and which treatments fit each cause, since these details can affect your next steps.

Q.
RLS symptoms often peak in the evening. Learn why the "restless" feeling gets worse when you sit down to relax and how to stop it.
A.
RLS symptoms typically peak in the evening because your circadian rhythm lowers dopamine and brain iron availability at night, and being still while you sit or lie down lets the sensations become more noticeable, while movement brings temporary relief. There are several factors to consider; see below to understand more. To stop it, focus on checking ferritin and a CBC for low iron, improving sleep habits and limiting caffeine, using moderate daytime exercise, brief walking or stretching, massage, and warm or cool packs in the evening, reviewing medications with your doctor, and considering prescriptions for persistent cases, while seeking prompt care for red flags like sudden pain, swelling, warmth, or numbness. Complete details and next steps are outlined below.

Q.
That "creepy crawly" sensation is a classic symptom of Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS). Explore why it happens and how to find immediate relief.
A.
That creepy crawly feeling in your legs at night is most often Restless Legs Syndrome, a neurologic condition where dopamine signaling falters, often influenced by low brain iron, genetics, certain medications, and health conditions, so symptoms surge at rest and in the evening. For quick relief, move and stretch your legs, try massage, heat or cold, and limit late caffeine and alcohol; for longer-term control, ask your clinician to check ferritin and review meds and conditions, and see below for important details, red flags, and when to seek care that could change your next steps.

Q.
The "Evening Heavy Leg": Why Your RLS Gets Worse at Sunset
A.
Evening heavy legs and restless legs symptoms often worsen at sunset due to circadian timing that lowers dopamine activity and brain iron availability, combined with more inactivity and fluid pooling that make sensations surge at rest. There are several factors to consider, including look-alikes like venous insufficiency or neuropathy and red flags such as one-sided swelling or severe pain; see complete details below to understand causes, self-care options, iron testing, and when to see a doctor.

Q.
Periodic Limb Movement Disorder (PLMD): Women’s Action Guide
A.
Periodic Limb Movement Disorder causes involuntary leg movements during sleep that fragment rest and lead to daytime fatigue; women are often affected during pregnancy, perimenopause, and menopause, with low iron even without anemia being a key, fixable trigger. It is distinct from but can overlap with Restless Legs Syndrome, and diagnosis usually requires a sleep study. There are several factors to consider for treatment and next steps, including checking ferritin, reviewing medicines that can worsen movements, optimizing sleep habits, and using targeted therapies when appropriate; see below for specifics, urgent warning signs, and a step by step action plan that could change which next steps you take.
